Dr. Josep Dalmau, an international leader in neuroscience, receives the XXIII Burdinola Research Award

The XXIII Burdinola Research Award recognises Dr. Josep Dalmau Obrador for his outstanding scientific career and significant contributions to the study of autoimmune encephalitis, which have helped transform the diagnosis and treatment of these diseases.

The jury of the XXIII Burdinola Research Award, dedicated this year to Personalised and precision medicine in psychiatric and neurodegenerative diseases, has decided to grant the award to Dr. Josep Dalmau Obrador, in recognition of his outstanding research career and contribution to the field.

An internationally renowned neurologist and researcher, Dr. Dalmau currently conducts his research at the Institut d’Investigacions Biomèdiques August Pi i Sunyer (IDIBAPS)-Hospital Clínic and the CaixaResearch Institute.

His scientific career is particularly distinguished by the discovery of several autoimmune encephalitis syndromes, diseases in which the immune system mistakenly attacks certain proteins in neurons, disrupting normal brain function.

His findings have been key to identifying disorders that could previously be mistaken for viral infections or psychiatric conditions. His research focuses on understanding why these immune responses against the brain occur and translating these advances into faster diagnoses and more effective treatments.

The winner was selected during a jury meeting recently held at Burdinola’s facilities. The jury for this XXIII edition comprised Joseba Pineda, Alfonso Hernández Frías, Carlos Matute Almau, Onintza Sagredo, María Paz García-Portilla González, José Javier Meana Martínez and Jorge Carballo Ramos, whom we would like to thank for their commitment and dedication.

The XXIII Burdinola Research Award ceremony will take place on 9 November at the CaixaResearch Institute, where we will have the opportunity to recognise Dr. Dalmau’s scientific career and contribution to research.

We would like to extend our warmest congratulations to Dr. Dalmau on this recognition. Once again, at Burdinola we remain close to science, to those who conduct research and to those who contribute to advancing it.
