The project
BioCruces is made up of the Department of Health of the Basque Government, the Basque Health Service Osakidetza, the Basque Foundation for Innovation and Research in Health (BIOEF) and the University of the Basque Country / Euskal Herriko Unibertsitatea (UPV / EHU). In addition, Biocruces works in collaboration with the main hospital and the Centre for Cooperative Research in Biosciences (CICbioGUNE), the Basque Centre for Applied Mathematics (BCAM), a centre with a sound reputation in the field of applied mathematics, and Ikerbasque, an organisation founded by the Government of the Basque Country to foster science in the region, through programmes to attract and recruit researchers and stimulate research.
Burdinola was awarded the project to design and equip the laboratories at the new BioCruces facilities in Bizkaia.
The Cruces University Hospital's Health Research Institute is a benchmark in the Basque Country.
The new building has 7 floors and about 3,000 m2 of floor space, of which about 1,000 m2 will be occupied by laboratories and fully equipped by Burdinola. Working in close collaboration with the Planning Laboratory, they will jointly evaluate the processes, equipment and regulations required to carry out the preliminary project, the installation and functional integration of people, spaces and equipment. As a manufacturer, Burdinola has also brought its range of furniture and fume cupboard solutions, which incorporate the latest developments from its R&D and innovation activity. The total cost of the construction, the refurbishment of the areas of the hospital that also include Biocruces and the scientific equipment amount to an investment of 18.1 million euros.
