The main functions of the Carlos III Health Institute (ISCIII) are centred around three pillars:
- Biomedical research: promotion and development of excellence and highly competitive research
- Scientific and technical services: Provision of reference services to support the General State Administration and the National Health System.
- Healthcare science and technical training: training programmes on public health, health management and management, and scientific management and management, mainly aimed at healthcare professionals.
The Carlos III Health Institute is the main public research body which finances, manages and carries out biomedical research in Spain. With more than 20 years of research into life and health sciences and the provision of benchmark services, it is also the body that manages the Strategic Health Action (AES) within the framework of the National R&D and Innovation Plan.
